FAMILY HAWAI‘I 21 THE FAMILY FRIENDLY BEACHES OF O'AHU WINDWARD (EAST) COAST BEACHES Makapu'u Beach - a popular body-boarding beach. Waimānalo Beach - the 6.5km stretch of sand faces calm, clear waters. Perfect for body-boarding and body-sur ng. Lanikai Beach - constantly ranked among the best in the world with sparkling sand, calm waters and two mini islands called the Mokuluas (locally referred to as "Moks") that can be reached via kayak. Kualoa Regional Park - opposite Kualoa Ranch, this beautiful beach o ers spectacular views down the east coast. Note: Observe all warning signs and be aware of changing conditions, strong currents and reefs. Use your own best judgement to determine whether a beach is appropriate for you and your family's swimming ability. Above and below: O‘ahu offers many family-friendly beaches. Hawaii Tourism Authority (HTA) / Tor Johnson Yokohama Bay - this curvy beach with turquoise waters is a great spot to sunbathe and watch surfers and dolphins. Nearby Ka'ena Point o ers a hiking trail with rewarding ocean views. SOUTH SHORE BEACHES Waikīkī Beach - Duke Kahanamoku Statue welcomes visitors to one of the world's most popular beaches. Thanks to its wave break, this is one of the best places in Hawai'i for beginners to try sur ng and canoe paddling. Waikīkī comprises a few beaches including Fort DeRussy (west), Waikīkī Beach, Kuhio and Queen's Surf Beach (near Diamond Head). Ala Moana Beach Park & Magic Island - just west of Waikīkī, this 0.8km stretch is protected by a reef. Magic Island peninsula extends from the beach with seawalls and a shallow lagoon. Perfect for keiki (children). Hanauma Bay Nature Preserve - a stunning bay sitting between two dormant volcanic craters with clear, shallow waters and a multitude of marine life. One of the best places to snorkel on O'ahu. Gear rental is available onsite. Looking for a family-friendly swimming spot?... O'ahu's beaches have it all. Waikīkī Beach is certainly world- renowned, but there are many other stunning beaches to discover along O'ahu's 180km coastline. NORTH SHORE BEACHES Kawela Bay/Turtle Bay - protected from large waves and surf, this beach is one of the island's best places to snorkel, with honu (green sea turtle) sometimes spotted. Waimea Bay - notorious for monstrous winter waves. In summer, the swells subside for great swimming and snorkelling. LEEWARD (WEST) COAST BEACHES Kō'Olina Resort & Marina - discover lagoons created for the Kō'Olina Resort, home to the JW Marriott Ihilani Resort & Spa and the Aulani, A Disney Resort & Spa. Perfect for families. Makaha Beach - the best sur ng on the west coast. Beware of the sloping sand beachhead that can cause backwash and catch unsuspecting visitors o guard. FOR SURF & SURFER- SPOTTING ONLY! These are not family swimming beaches but they're great spots if you want to watch some experienced surfers in action: 'Ehukai Beach (Banzai Pipeline) - powerful waves break over a sharp reef, making this one of the world's most dangerous surf spots (and one of the venues for the Vans Triple Crown of Sur ng from November to December). Sunset Beach - from 'Ehukai (Banzai Pipeline) to Sunset Point, and encompassing a dozen di erent reef breaks, this 3km beach is considered the longest stretch of ride-able surf in the world. It's also a Vans Triple Crown of Sur ng venue.
